Cozy

We’re being home bodies this weekend.

I love the weekends when we are all home together.  We did get snow the other day, so we’re feeling extra warm and cozy, mostly just staying in and having fun.

Daddy is making fire and sharing milk-froth-topped tea, dancing and tickling, playing monster and reading books.

Speaking of reading books, I have two book clubs this week and just started reading the first (600+ page) book on Wednesday.  I managed to finish it tonight, and have one more book to get through by Thursday.  So I’m making this a quickie tonight.  Happy weekend!

Toy Storage Makeover

Last week I went to a play date at a friend’s house.  I hadn’t been to her house before.  She had the most amazing basement playroom/toy storage system.  Huge closets and a wall of shelves with bins and baskets all holding toys sorted by type.  It was awe-inspiring.  It at least inspired me to finally finish the toy storage redo I’ve been gradually working on at our house.  A few months ago, our toy storage consisted of this:

When Miss was tiny, I started out using a cube-shaped ottoman-type thing that had a lid on it to store her toys (you can see it in the above photo in front of the window).  Once her she had her first Christmas under her belt, that was no longer sufficient.  So after a while I got the baskets you see under the table below our TV.  Then I moved a bunch of toys into a Rubbermade container in the basement.  They just kept expanding and expanding.  And they were totally disorganized.  My family room had been taken over.  So, a few months ago I made the decision to buy a few new toy storage items and move everything either down to the basement or into the sunroom.  My husband and Miss took care of the assembly.

And the result is so much better.

Two of the pieces we added were the book cart and the low table (which has been shown in a few other posts as the girls love coloring on it) with the rolling toy bins underneath.  We also redistributed our plants to several other spots in the house, and they look much nicer now.

This is the wall along the front of the house before:

And the wall along the back of the house after:

The bookshelf with toy bin at the bottom is our other new piece.  I also purchased the fabric baskets to store the girls’ play food and dishes.  They just happened to fit perfectly in the boxes of one of my old wooden-crates-turned-shelves (just to the left of the doors).  We never use these doors to go in and out to the backyard, so having the table and some toys in front of it works just fine.

I am quite happy with the end result.  It’s nothing compared to my friend’s super amazing basement space.  But it works.  I think the girls like it too.  It is more organized so they seem to enjoy their toys more.  And they still play in the family room, which is a bigger space and better for running around with baby dolls in strollers and/or shopping carts.

Note the boots in this picture.  Remember I posted about getting a great deal on winter boots?  Miss loves them!

Without the toys strewn all over the floor in the family room, there’s more room to run, and for them to chase each other.

I’m happy to have this great space for my girls to play and color and have friends over.  We also moved lots of their bigger toys to the basement, like Miss’s tricycle and Lass’s cozy coupe car.  So they have another space for running and playing and I get to keep those toys out of sight and out of the way.  I couldn’t bring myself to make the basement into our main playroom because it isn’t nicely finished (picture drop ceilings, ugly chair-rail-height paneling, and carpet without padding underneath) and it has no windows.  We get little enough daylight here in the winter.  I can’t bring myself to spend more than a little bit of time in our windowless basement per day.  So, this is the perfect solution for me.

During the Commercials…

It’s been a great weekend.

Quality time was plentiful.

Daddy’s girls.

To top it off, tonight is the premier of “The Next Iron Chef.”  I’m typing this during the commercials.  It’s an awesome show. You should watch it.

I managed to finish working on Miss’s ballerina costume just before the show started.  I had to make the best ballerina costume ever to convince her that she wants to wear it instead of her sister’s bear costume.  Hopefully she’ll love it.  A little sneak peek.

A while ago a drew my Chopped ingredients of canned tuna, panko breadcrumbs, and tomato paste.  I made dinner with them tonight.  Panko-crusted tuna cakes with roasted red pepper and corn relish (the tomato paste was in the cakes and in the relish).  It was yummy.  I only have a few minutes during the commercials, so I’ll post the recipe later.  Here’s the dish.

Halloween tomorrow.  Miss’s school party and trick or treating with both girls.  Can’t wait!

Vacation at Home

For the past week, my husband has been on vacation.  Usually when he has time off work, we go somewhere.  We live far away from our families, and think it’s important to see them as much as possible, so we are often traveling to visit someone.  This week, for the first time in a long time, we vacationed at home.  It was wonderful.
We got to spend lots of great quality time with the Daddy.  He was able to come to Miss’s gymnastics class and to the girls’ music class.

I think he really enjoyed observing both classes.  Miss has really blossomed in her gymnastics class and both girls really get into their music class.  Miss loves to sing and play the instruments and Lass is a total ham.

Today we went to brunch, where we got to carve pumpkins for Halloween.  Miss and Daddy did all the work on our pumpkin.  Last year the Daddy did it all by himself, but this time Miss was able to really participate.

She helped scoop out the guts

and decide what type of face to draw for the Jack-o-lantern.

Lass enjoyed wandering around and looking at some of the other pumpkins.

Miss was even able to help cut out the pumpkin face.

She was pretty happy with the finished product.

We also spent lots of fun time with Daddy at home.  Tonight Miss got to try out her new dot markers by drawing with Daddy.

They drew snakes and faces and lots of grapes and blueberries.

It has been a great week.

Homebodies

Today we stayed home. After our weekend away, I just wanted to be here. The weather cooperated enough that we could get outside for the girls to have some fun and new experiences. Like roller skating.

She held on to my hand for about 30 seconds before saying, “I want to do it myself.” And she did.

She fell down several times, but didn’t seem to mind too much.

She just got back up and kept on going. Doesn’t she look so grown up?

And this little one is so close to walking. Today I saw her take one tiny step forward before grabbing on to something. Outside she was most definitely the master of this lion.
She pushed it sideways in circles instead of standing behind it and rolling it.

There is a circle of grass around a big, gorgeous oak tree in our front yard. It’s my favorite place on our property. I used to spread a blanket there and sit outside with Miss during her first summer. I take the girls out there now and we blow bubbles and take our shoes off to feel the grass on our feet. Today, like every other day, we were drawn to the circle. Miss calls it, “The Hole” or “The Rocks” (it’s mostly sunken below the level of our driveway and surrounded by rocks).
The girls decided to take a little rest in the shade from all their hard work.

Under the tree it’s cool and the grass is soft. There are usually treasures to be found like leaves, pieces of bark, sticks, bugs, etc. Miss marvels at them and Lass tries to eat them.
It’s a peaceful spot to sit.
And the view from under the tree is amazing.

After naps we went outside to try out the new sand in the sandbox. Miss enjoyed it, but we had to take a break from it because she kept trying to dump the sand outside the sandbox.
I put the cover back over it and she begged me to let her go in the “baby swing.” I convinced her to try out the big girl swing first (which she has enjoyed greatly but fell from when playing with her cousins on Thursday) and told her she could go on the baby swing after that if she still wanted to.
She didn’t want to.

Good News and Bad News

Good news: We had a fun weekend. Lots of playing chase and snuggling. We travel so much that I really cherish these weekends when we are able to just be home. All four of us. Spending time together. The best.

Bad news: My computer is really not well. I took it to a repair place, and they will have it until at least Tuesday. Probably much longer as it is the only place within 100 miles or so that can repair a Mac and they are super busy and thus, super slow.
Good news: My husband is kind enough to let me use his computer. So, though I probably won’t post as often as I’d like, I can at least get my blogging fix here and there.

Stickers

Stickers are all the rage in our house these days.

We use them for potty rewards.

We use different ones as rewards for following the sleep rules (code for “taking a nap”)

Miss loves stickers.

So does Lass.

Happy Home

You can always tell when we’ve spent the day at home.

Miss got out tons of toys to make sure her sister had enough to play with.

We didn’t leave the house today. Staying in for more than one day starts to make me a bit crazy, but for today it was nice. We read lots of books and played games. Legwarmers were the stay-at-home style for today. Miss insisted on wearing some when she saw me put them on Lass.

Now that Lass is sitting up so well, she and Miss play together more and more. They spent lots of time working on sharing today. The big toys of the day were a ball, a chain of plastic beads and a squeaking giraffe. Miss liked to do a quick swap with Lass when she wanted something Lass had in her hand. Lass loved the big blue ball, so Miss would roll it up to her and then stealthily grab the beads and/or giraffe in exchange. Lass really enjoyed the ball, so she didn’t seem to care. Miss was very into the sharing/swap idea, as when I once handed her the giraffe, she said “Fanks. You wanna chew this?” and held out the slobbery beads to me (I think she’s getting more molars, as she is often chewing toys at the back of her mouth).

During Lass’s morning nap Miss and I got some quality time in the kitchen. Instead of our usual cookies or another baking project, we tried a no-bake St. Patrick’s Day treat today. We started with yogurt-covered pretzels. Naturally we had to try out a few of these before getting started.

We got all our stuff together
and then melted some white chocolate chips in the microwave (of course we sampled these too).
Miss got a shamrock sticker so she would know what we were making. We shaped the pretzels into shamrocks and used the white chocolate to “glue” the pieces together.

Once they dried we used green frosting and white frosting with green sprinkles to really make them shamrocks (this idea came from the March issue of Family Fun magazine).
Miss dug in and enjoyed the sprinkles.

It was a happy day at home.

A Little Cabin Fever

Other than to go take Miss to gymnastics yesterday afternoon, we haven’t left the house since Monday. You might say we’ve got a bit of cabin fever, but not in a bad way. Being cooped up in the house has forced us to keep busy with crafts and projects. And it also prompts me to bring out my camera. When we are stuck in the house all day, I take photos. A lot. Taking pictures makes me happy.
Yesterday we brought out the finger paints again. Miss had been pointing to her paintings on the fridge from the last time we painted, proudly saying, “I made that.” I wanted to let her try painting with a paintbrush, but I couldn’t find the brushes so we just used hands again. Boy, did she ever.

I love the painting on the right. Not only does it have the first handprints I have of hers since she was born, but it looks like a Valentine’s Day painting with the big red heart. I helped her do the handprints, but I didn’t help her to make the heart-like shape. I actually didn’t even recognize it as a heart-like shape until my husband mentioned it when he came home from work. Love.
She was quite proud of her messiness this time.
And she enjoyed showing off for her sister.

I think she may have been trying to decide if she could get away with painting Lass.
She stuck with the paper.

Well, sort of.

After getting cleaned up we got ready to go to gymnastics. I let her pick out her shirt, and what did she pick but my fave Wonder Woman T shirt. She pointed to the picture of Wonder Woman and said, “Mama.” Weeellll, okay! Then she caught on when I told her who it really was and she kept saying, “Wun Nuh Man!”
In the photos below she is putting the hearts from the other day’s post into her shirt. This is seemingly much more fun to do over and over than to put them on the window. Every time I go to change her diaper one or two of these things falls out of her onesie.

I just love this pic of her talking to our old dog Chica, whose health seems to be declining of late. She’s a good old dog.
Lass is really moving herself around with her rolling, though she’s not terribly precise in where she gets herself to.

Help!!
Miss went grocery shopping in her refrigerator.
She loves her shopping cart. This is a rare photo of her pushing it herself though. Usually she orders, “Mama push!” “Mama do it!” “Mama run.” The girl loves to be moving and loves for me or her daddy to push her shopping cart or baby stroller and chase her while doing it.
Just cute.

Sisters.
I love seeing how the girls interact more and more as Lass gets bigger.
This one looks like they’re already sharing a little secret.

Bad timing on my part, but this was one of many kisses from big sister today.
And one final note, at dinner tonight Miss said, “Razzle Dazzle!!” It took me a few times to catch on to what she was saying, and each time I asked her to repeat it she got this sheepish little grin on her face, which erupted into a huge radiant smile and laugh when I finally got it and said, “Did you just say ‘Razzle Dazzle’?” Then of course we had to say it several times each and laugh every time. She is just a funny, fun little girl.
P.S. “Razzle Dazzle” is the favorite saying of my hubby and I from the show Yo Gabba Gabba. It’s a Muno signature exclamation, in case you’re wondering.

Snow Day

I’m not sure if we’re going to be hit by this big snowstorm heading in this general direction. We might be just far enough north that we don’t get much snow from it. We got a couple of inches last night, but the weather forecast looks like we’ll have mostly flurries for the next few days. Nevertheless, it’s very cold and we have plenty of snow.

So, I declared today to be a snow day at our house. We won’t be going anywhere and are all settled in to stay nice and warm and have lots of fun. Right now it’s nap time for both girls, which is always fun. This morning we had plenty of good times too. What better way to spend a cozy winter day inside than by baking with my favorite almost-two-year-old?

We had some very ripe bananas, or as Miss calls then, “beenahs” that were past the point of eating by themselves. Naturally, they needed to be transformed into Beenah Bread! Miss did a great job mashing the bananas
and maybe eating a little bit too, while Lass supervised.
She helped me measure in the rest of the ingredients and take the batter-filled loaf pan to the oven. I forgot to grease the pan, so the finished product didn’t come out of the pan very nicely. In fact, the bottom of the loaf stayed firmly stuck in the pan while the top half flopped out. I am seriously not cut out for this baking thing! I managed to get the bottom portion out in one piece and stick it onto the top piece so it at least looks like a nice loaf. From a distance. Until you cut it. It tastes good!
Then we moved on to some Valentine’s Day decorating. I’ve not really been much of a Valentine’s Day celebrater (is that a word?) in the past decade or so. I typically think of the holiday as not much more than a way for greeting card, jewelry, candy, and flower companies to make money. Though I usually get my hubby a card and sometimes we go out to dinner or I cook a special dinner at home, we don’t do much else for the day. But now that Miss is at such a fun age, I can’t let this cheesy holiday go by without plenty of fitting activities.
Today, Valentine’s window stickies. Miss loved these by the way. The last thing she asked for when I was putting her down for her nap was, “Play more hearts??” She kept peeling them off and sticking them back on, and has assigned a particular heart to each member of our family (the swirly one in the photo below is Daddy’s).

I don’t know what our next Valentine’s project will be. I did buy more cookie dough, so we’ll be baking and decorating Valentine’s Day cookies in the near future. And probably doing some other crafts. Maybe we’ll make some cards to send. Who knows? It definitely brings more meaning to this holiday though when I can make it into a fun time for my girl. I feel great about celebrating an overly-commercialized holiday when we do it with homemade gifts and treats and make it into just another reason to give extra love and hugs around our home.
If you are getting hit by the coming blizzard, I hope you’ll stay safe and warm!
